Correct. Your employer can’t ask you to work for free. However, 42% of young women we asked have told us they’ve been asked to complete trial shifts without pay.

Stand with young women and take action to protect their rights at work

Young women are being underpaid, harassed and discriminated against in workplaces across England and Wales.

The system is stacked against them: existing power imbalances are often exploited by employers and current employment laws are failing to protect young women.

They are forced to put up with low pay, insecure contracts and even sexual harassment and discrimination just to keep their jobs. Speaking up can lead to lost hours and wages, demotion, bullying, or being pushed out entirely. Too many young women are punished for asserting their rights.

Young women have told us:

  • 37% had been bullied, harassed or made to feel uncomfortable at work.
  • 37% hadn’t had breaks, holiday or sick leave they were entitled to.
  • 25% of young women who couldn’t successfully resolve their issue said that they were disciplined, demoted or dismissed.

Low pay, insecure work and discrimination at the start of a career can not only damage young women’s confidence, but their mental health and long-term earning potential too. Many young women find themselves forced out of careers they want to pursue, or leaving the workforce altogether.

This has to stop. Young women deserve equality at work and the right to speak up without fear of being punished. Employment law changes are coming, and we have an opportunity to make sure they work for young women.

Let's stand together and demand fair and safe workplaces for young women.
